The stele written by Tang Cenxun and inscribed by Xu Hao was transcribed by Yan Zhenqing in 752. It was in Xi'an of Shaanxi Province. The stele has 34 lines, each containing 66 characters. Duobao Pagoda was written when Yan Zhenqing was 44 years old. This earliest stele of the Yan Calligraphy reflected Yan Zhenqing's calligraphy characteristics in the early period. The wide vertical strokes and thin horizontal strokes have a strong comparison. It emphasized elegance and fancifulness; yet it also pursues composure and firmness in the stroke of the brush, structuring characters on powerful frames with tender management on brush line. The structural feature is the straight horizontal and vertical strokes with rigorous and balanced layout as well as profound, stable and beautiful style. Compared with Yan Zhenqing's other regular script steles, the strokes are stable and delicate strokes. It is the copybook model for generations in history.
