The architect's scale and engineer's scale are quite similar in appearance but they have different scale markings and are used for different purposes.

The architect's scale is used for obtaining measurements from scaled drawings of buildings and other structures. An architect's scale is read from the left or right side depending on the scale being used. The 16 or full scale is a standard ruler with each mark representing 1/16". Other sides include these scales: 3, 1-1/2, 1, 3/4, 1/2, 3/8, 1/4, 1/16, 1/8, 3/32.

The engineer's scale is also known as a civil scale. It is used for transferring length measurements at different proportions. The scales are labeled 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60, each representing decimal fractions of an inch. Therefore, one inch on a drawing equals between 10 to 60 feet.
